George Benton Scippio

August 11, 1949 ~ May 8, 2017 (age 67) 67 Years Old

George Benton Scippio was born on August 11, 1949 in Robeson County, North Carolina to the late Mr. and Mrs. Roy and Ophelia Scippio of Red Springs, North Carolina. Following the death of his parents, George and his siblings were reared by their death of his parents, George and his siblings were reared by their aunt the late Beulah McNeill. George was called to be with the Lord on Monday, May 8, 2017. A sister, Miss Hazel Scippio and brother Mr. Mickey Scippio preceded him in death.

George attended Peterson High School. As a young man, he played many sports but had a special love for baseball. The Red Springs "Pirates," s semi-professional local team that entertained the town and neighboring communities was one of the teams he played for. Later in life, you could always find George donned in his favorite team apparel the "Dallas Cowboys" during football season and the "UNC Tar Heels" during basketball season. Excitement didn't quite capture his exuberance in April of 2017 when his beloved Tar Heels won the NCAA National Championship again. George loved his two dogs, "Benjamin" and "Killer" who he referred to as his "pups". They brought him much joy.

A self-employed contractor, George remodeled homes and built room additions. He was also employed at J.P. Stevens and Vardell Hall (Highlander Academy) for many years. George operated "George's Place" the last of the small businesses on Richardson Street and the gathering place for family fun and community fellowship. With an atmosphere that was similar to a barbershop George's Place was better than the local newspaper. "One mo' swallow" was his favorite slogan. George, and George's Place value to the neighborhood was reminiscent of the vibrancy Richardson Street provided to the Black Community for more than 60 years.

A special uncle, George helped to raise Tina, Reginald, Michael, Aaron, Artrelle, and Miquel Scippio. A father figure to his many other nieces and nephews and young friends, George loved and cherished them all.
